Located to the north of the Bavarian Alps, on the River Isar, Munich (München) is a city hat combines proud provincialism with international glamour. Founded by Duke Henry the ion in 1158, the city had become, within a century, the seat of the Wittelsbach dynasty, who ruled the duchy, electorate and kingdom of Bavaria until the end of World War I.
Their influence is evident in the concentration of grand Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and neo-classical architecture adorning Munich's streets. Perhaps most importantly, the Wittelsbach's patronage of the arts and extensive art collections provided the basis for Munich's world-class museums and galleries.
The city acquired the name München ('home of the monks') from its first monastery, founded in the eighth century. Monasteries have since played an important role in the history of the city, not least by starting the beer brewing traditions for which the city has received worldwide renown. Following recent mergers, the city's six breweries have been reduced to four - Augustiner, Hofbräuhaus, Paulaner (who now own Hacker-Pschorr) and the merged Spaten-Löwenbräu. Drinking a foaming Mass of beer in one of the city's beer halls or gardens is an essential part of the Munich experience.
The citizens of Munich demonstrate a cosmopolitan refinement as well as genuine passion for the region's many traditions and tourists flock to the city for the world famous Oktoberfest, to indulge in an orgy of beer and revelry. The stereotypical images of lederhosen-clad Bavarians quaffing vast portions of beer and sausage might apply at this time, however, with a strong cultural scene, richly endowed art collections and excellent shopping, the city certainly has more to offer than just light entertainment.
With warm summers accommodating lovely garden restaurants and open-air stages and snowy winters with romantic Christmas markets, Munich is a place to visit all year round.
It is the participant's responsibility to have a valid passport and any necessary visas and permits to study abroad. Visit G3Visas for comprehensive information on visa, passport, permit and general country entry requirements.
Flughafen München Franz Joseph Strauss - Munich International Airport (MUC)is located 28km (17 miles) northeast of the city centre and is Germany's most important international gateway, after Frankfurt.

Each student will be expected to take a short placement test on the first Monday morning of the course (unless a complete beginner), to determine the students language level and ensure placement in the correct class. Lessons are usually held in the mornings, starting at 10am, which leave the afternoons free for social or cultural activities, trips, workshops, short excursions or free time to relax or explore on your own.
The course system contains 6 levels. The teaching plan and progression of each level are set according to selected textbooks. The organization of the levels is carried out in accordance with the examination system of the Goethe Institute: after completion of the basic level, students can acquire the Zertifikat Deutsch als Fremdsprache. After completion of the intermediate level, they can be allowed to the Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung and following the advanced level to the Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung. Please see the Course Outline link, for more information.
The teaching follows a clear progression and aims to train grammar and sentence structures and expand vocabulary. The alternating of teaching methods guarantees optimum learning success. In individual, partner or group work our students train their reading and listening comprehension as well as written and oral expression.
Our main focus is on oral communication, which you can put into practice not only in role plays, language learning games and discussions, but also in the leisure activities with your teachers. Regular tests integrated into the lessons allow course participants to assess their own progress.
After classes are over for the day, our program allows you plenty of time to discover your new country, culture, traditions, customs and everyday life. Our optional cultural and social activities allow you to make new friends among your new international classmates, experience cultural and social activities together, and also practice your new language skills in real life situations. In some cases, a small additional fee will be charged to cover local transport and entrance costs.

Host Family: (private or shared room) 2 meals daily.
Living with a host family is probably the best and most effective way to become fully immersed into the language and culture of your chosen country. All families are chosen after a careful selection procedure and are visited regularly by the school to ensure that high living standards are maintained. As many of our host families live in the surrounding neighborhoods, the trip to school, is usually not more than 20 to 30 minutes away.
Students have access to all living areas in the house and in most cases, will be expected to share the bathroom. All bed linens and pillows will be provided, however we suggest you bring your own towels. If your family does not provide a laundry service, they may allow you to use the laundry facilities for a small additional charge.
Staying in a family is a truly wonderful experience and many students make lifetime friends with their host family. However, you should also have realistic expectations and recognize that an element of flexibility is required to adjust to the local customs and way of life. Your host family may not have the same comforts as your own home but you will always be treated as a guest and free to come and go as you wish.
NOTES: Airport transfers may be included or available, also extra nights can be booked before / after course (at an additional cost), please check price page for details. The Sunday night accommodation before your course begins on Monday, is included in the program price. All meals will be local custom and meal times may be different to what you are used to, however you are not obligated to eat all your meals with the family, just notify them when you will not be returning to eat.. Our families are diverse with young couples without children, couples with children (of all age groups) and older couples with grown children who are no longer at home. Please see the Accommodation link for additional information.

"An intense but fun experience filled with chances to meet new friends and experience new things."
Chris Frueh (age 17)
"I've really fallen in love with Munich. It's a great city. And there's so much on offer in the way of culture. I went somewhere new almost every day. To exhibitions in the afternoons - there was European avant-garde in the Hypokunsthalle - and in the evenings to concerts, or to discos or pubs in Schwabing, the student area of Munich. After a few weeks of the language course I even dared to go to the cinema. I watched one of these really good German films and understood most of it. It was called 'Jenseits der Stille' and the producer comes from Munich. The next time I come, I'll go to the theatre too.
At the weekend I sometimes went to a football match. With Takafumi. He's a real fan of the Bavarian team..The great thing about Munich is that even a woman can go out alone. It's absolutely safe here. You can go everywhere by public transport and the connections are very good.'
Anna,(23)Swedish student
"I'm so happy that I was able to be in Munich for two weeks. I've visited so many towns and have tried a lot of new things. These two weeks were like a dream for me. I thought I'd never learn German but with you, it was very easy
for me. I simply spoke German. Without fear of making mistakes. I'd like to thank the team for my wonderful time here. Particularly Ute for the brilliant aerobics."
Eugenija,(19)Russian student
"Munich is a great city, tons of stuff to do, skiing at the weekends during the winter in Austria, I would recommend it to any one."
Andrew, 32, Canadian Student
