Located in the state of Bahia on the Northeast coast of Brazil, the city of São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos (Salvador da Bahia) is situated on an arrowhead peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and All Saints Bay.
Originally called the "City of Bahia", Salvador was founded in 1549 by Tomé de Souza, the first Governor General of colonial Brazil, and remained the nation's capital until 1763. Over half of all the Africans brought to the New World as slaves landed in Brazil, beginning in the early 16th century, and the port of Salvador was one of the main gateways for the slave trade.
During colonial times, the city was invaded by the French and the Dutch, who actually occupied Salvador for about a year in the early 17th century. Salvador was also frequently attacked by pirates from as far away as the Barbary Coast, so a chain of forts was built to protect the coastline, including the "Sea Fort." Bahia won its independence from Portugal nearly a year later than southern Brazil, which is why it has its own independence day: July 2nd (it also celebrates September
7th along with the rest of the country).
Bahia is considered Brazil's motherland, not only because Brazil was discovered there, but because its people are a fusion of diverse cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds. Bahians are a people who have learned to harmonize their differences and, better yet, to revel in them, combining modernity with tradition, religious devotion with popular festivals and rich cultural diversions with an old-fashioned work ethic.
Salvador, the third largest city in Brazil, (population of 2 million) is divided in to two parts, the "Lower City", which contains the old port and the commercial district and the "Upper City" is famous for the Lacerda Elevator and older architecture.
Salvador also boasts a Historic District that UNESCO has declared a Treasure of Humanity. Originally a wealthy neighborhood, it gradually decayed into a zone of tenements and brothels until its recent restoration. The Historic
District is now a favorite watering spot for students and Bahians alike.
The square is open-air with pastel-colored row houses and sloping cobblestone streets. Don't miss the Olodum band's performances at "Terça-Feira da Benção" and the daily concerts and shows, ranging from Afro-Bahian Carnival rhythms to Bossa Nova.
Besides being an old colonial town, Salvador has beautiful beaches with palm trees and white dunes, which are the site of intense social activity. To the North, up the Costa dos Coqueiros on the Linha Verde (Green Line) route, you' will find many resorts and hideaways: Praia do Forte with its rhea birds and giant sea turtles. At the local Modelo market, a familiar sight is the "baiana",usually an older woman dressed in the traditional white, pleated dresses of colonial Bahia, who sells coconut sweets and spicy "vataps", "acarajés" from a tray that she carries to the market on her head.

It is the participant's responsibility to have a valid passport and any necessary visas and permits to study abroad. Visit G3Visas for comprehensive information on visa, passport, permit and general country entry requirements.
Salvador has an international airport with good connections to the rest of the country. Most international students fly through Rio.

Founded in 1988, our school is located in the city center and is only one-kilometer from the beach. Housed in a large modern building, which is surrounded by greenery, the school has bright classrooms and offers all the facilities required to study a new language.
The school uses a collection of instructional material that has been developed by the team of instructors at the school. It offers an interactive, reality-based teaching strategy in which lessons are built around everyday uses of Portuguese. Formal lessons are augmented with videos and field trips to a variety of locations including parks, markets, and the city's historic district..
The School is located in the area called BARRA, which is five minutes walking distance to the PORTO DA BARRA beach and about 2 miles to the Pelourinho area. The school is in a big and beautiful house with garden in a quiet and safe street.
The school has air-conditioned classrooms, audio-visual teaching equipment, a school-owned kitchen for cooking lessons, an outside area for social activities and also offers free access to the internet for all students. Lessons are held Monday to Friday in morning or afternoon, with field trips to a variety of locations including parks, markets and the city's historic district and frequent group meetings at nearby bars or restaurants..

Host Family: (private room) breakfast daily.
Living with a host family is probably the best and most effective way to become fully immersed into the language and culture of your chosen country. All families are chosen after a careful selection procedure and are visited regularly by the school to ensure that high living standards are maintained. As many of our host families live in the surrounding neighborhoods, the trip to school, is usually not more than 10 to 20 minutes away.
Students have access to all living areas in the house and in most cases, will be expected to share the bathroom. All bed linens and pillows will be provided, however we suggest you bring your own towels. If your family does not provide a laundry service, they may allow you to use the laundry facilities for a small additional charge. Staying in a family is a truly wonderful experience and many students make lifetime friends with their host family.
However, you should also have realistic expectations and recognize that an element of flexibility is required to adjust to the local customs and way of life. Your host family may not have the same comforts as your own home but you will always be treated as a guest and free to come and go as you wish.
GuestHouse: (private room) breakfast daily.

"My family was very well located, and the home was very comfortable. I did not spend a lot of time at the home, but when
I was there they were always friendly and helpful. Staying with the family was a great way to become more familiar with the language. The school, had a peaceful and fun atmosphere, and a nice array of students. The staff was helpful and friendly. Though my class was not very challenging in terms of grammar, we did a lot of speaking and writing, and my vocabulary and usage of words improved. Taking classes at the language school was a wonderful way to meet other people of all ages and nationalities.
Future Advice: I advise staying with a host family. Many of the families are used to having students, so they are flexible and helpful. It is a great way to feel more at home and immersed in the culture."
Lauren Gaskill (age 19)
"My host family was outgoing and friendly. I spent some time with various members of my "family" throughout my stay. I thought the school did its best to teach the language and that the instructors represented Salvador and Brazil very well. Do it while you have the chance even if for a short time. It's the most worth while vacations I've ever had. I thought I received excellent service. I got what was advertised."
David Martin (age 43)
"I had a very good experience. My Portuguese has improved significantly. I very much enjoyed cooking class and Afro Brazilian dance as well as excursions like the Ballet Folclórico and the Candomblé ceremony. The teachers are all wonderful."
Katherine Bernstein, USA student
"My three weeks were superb. Not only was the curriculum top , but the faculty and staff were always available and willing to help with any and every aspect of my stay in Salvador. Being a native Spanish speaker, the faculty tried to design a course that suited my particular needs, such as discovering new false cognates and idiomatic expressions. The host family was the icing on the cake. They gave me a perspective of life and culture in Salvador that no school could provide. I can truly say that I lived the life of a Bahian for 3 weeks. I highly recommend this experience to anyone looking to learn or improve their Portuguese language skills."
Wanda Echevarria, USA student
"This school was brilliant. They made learning Portuguese easy and a lot of fun. I normally have a few problems learning languages, but their teaching method and material was really clear and simple, and the teachers are only too keen to help if you have any problems. The cooking classes are great as well, and really compliment the language study. I would really recommend this to anyone wanting to learn Portuguese!"
Geogg Hodge, UK student
"It was a good experience, excellent school, bright airy surroundings, warm teachers and administration. Good program - no complaints."
Neville Gibbs, USA
"The school in Salvador, was a high quality school staffed with very nice, highly professional teachers. They were able to address many levels of proficiency within the program. The home stay was very comfortable, 10-15 minute walk from school. Very comfortable, very welcoming; I really felt like part of the family. The whole experience was positive (e eu posso falar em portugues)."
Charlie Braun (Age: 50) USA student
